Making 200 men on risers look 3-dimensional and individual seems like it should be easy but it is extremely difficult. The first six designers I worked with just couldn’t get it right. Steven Young understood it right off the bat, so we could concentrate on making art instead of just getting the guys on the back row in light.
Steven has been lighting the Chorus for fifteen years now. We do big production shows with dancers, sets, costumes, video, etc. Steven is one of the main reasons our shows look so good. Easy to work with and full of stage savvy, Steven is a huge asset to our productions. I wouldn’t trade him for the highest paid Broadway designer.
Since leaving the midwest in 1995, Steven has made a strong name for himself and his design work throughout Southern California and around the world. Credits include Putting It Together, and A Year with Frog and Toad for South Coast Repertory, Boulevard of Broken Dreams at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, A Time for Love for Studio Arena Theatre in Buffalo, The Laramie Project for the Laguna Playhouse, Side by Side by Sondheim, and Showtune for the Pasadena Playhouse, My Way, and The 39 Steps for McCoy-Rigby Entertainment in La Mirada, plus productions in Long Beach, Vista, Winnipeg, and Cincinnati.
Other designs include Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings (Ovation Award, Garland Award, LA Weekly Award) for Theatre@Boston Court; JOB: The Hip-Hopera at the Stella Adler and the NYMF 2006; Jekyll and Hyde (Ovation Award) for Cabrillo Music Theatre; Side Show (Garland Award, Robby Award) and The Laramie Project (Ovation Award nomination) for the Colony Theatre; Carousel, She Loves Me, and No Strings for Reprise!; Hot Mikado (Garland Award) for Musical Theatre West; A Picture of Dorian Gray, God Save Gertrude, and Summertime (Ovation Award nominations) for Theatre@Boston Court; Letting Go of God with Julia Sweeney.
Steven was honored in 2004 with the Angstrom Lifetime Achievement Award by the LADCC.
